“Russian immigrant women and the negotiation of social class and feminine identity through fashion”

This reading examines Russian immigrant woman’s experiences of fashion in Canadian culture. The interesting thing I found out was Russian woman started to sew their own clothes to keep up with trend even though they had financial hardship. Why did they have such strong desire to keep up with the fashion even though they had hard time to access to the material goods? The research found out that four out of ten Russian immigrant women tend to fit into the Canadian surroundings. They adapted the Canadians’ clothing attitude and started to wear something made them feel comfortable. So does the surrounding play an important role on people’s clothing attitude? Moreover, fashion is one of the ways that reflects one’s cultural heritage. So I am wondering should immigrants maintain their own identities on clothing? As the saying goes, “Do in Rome as the Romans do”. So should they alter to fit into the new culture?
