LOLITA     (SWEET LOLITA)

I have decided that my alter ego is to be a Lotita girl.

Background information about this look:

Lolita fashion is a fashion subculture originating in Japan. There are many different styles of Lolita. The one I am choosing is the Sweet Lolita, which is heavily influenced by Rococo styles. Focusing on the child and fantasy aspects of Lolita, the Sweet Lolita style adopts the basic Lolita format and uses lighter colors and child fantasy themes in its design.

Sweet Lolita places its focus on the child-like aspects of the Lolita style. Outfits consist of colorful prints, lace, bows, and ribbons to emphasize the cuteness in the design.

A knee length skirt or dress with a ‘cupcake’ shape is one of the significant identifications of Sweet Lolita.

-Why you choose this look?

First of all, I want to experience how Americans treat the subculture from Asia. Secondly, I am choosing this look because it is totally different from my personality. I think it might look a little bit odd for me to dress up like a little girl and walking around on the street. So it might be a good choice to receive reaction from others.

-How is the look different from you?

Personally, I hate to hear the word—“cute” from others when they talk about me so I don’t wear pink or anything that looks childish. The look of sweet Lolita is completely against my personality and taste cause I used to wear dark color clothes and I prefer to be looked mature. So I tend to choose stuffs that look mature but not childish, especially in my daily clothes. Wearing the light pink garments and acting as a 10-years-old girl, I might feel super uncomfortable and embarrassed.

–How will you execute this change?

My ultimate goal is dressing up like a pink doll. So I am going to get my clothes at the Japanese cloth stores cause I am sure I won’t get anything wrong there.  If I couldn’t find any clothes in those stores, I might consider getting my garments from Forever 21 and then mix-match them by myself.  For my hair, I am going to get the curry blonde wig from the Internet. Also, I am getting the pink or white headband to make me look cute. For my makeup, I am sure I can do a good job on this part since I have been doing this a lot for my friends. My makeup will focus on the eyes, so I probably wear several layers fake eyelash to make my eyes look two times bigger. To complete the look, I am going to get a teddy bear or doll or other cute animal bag.

-What is your strategy?

I am planning go to three different places to see how people treat me. I am spending four hours on each of the places. My first place is San Francisco where I come from.  I am choosing there because I would like to receive some reactions from those who have known me a lot. The second place I am going to is Hollywood. I pick there because I think costume is ‘normal’ in Hollywood so I want to know if my look is strange to them. The last place I am choosing is Little Tokyo where I may meet the real Lolita girls there. Actually, I am curious about how the Japanese-American would react to me.

– What is your blogging going to look like?

I am planning making a movie for this project. The movie will include some history about this culture, pictures of my final look and some videos from the interviewers.
